Our Review of the Rumble Roller
We love foam rolling in general. It is a great way to break up knots and help your muscle fibers to stretch. Without foam rolling or massage of some kind, stretching will never be enough. Imagine your muscles are rubber band with a knot tied in the middle. If you just pull the ends of the rubber band, the knot in the middle will only get tighter. So, foam rolling is absolutely essential for getting out knots which then allows you stretch much more efficiently.
We’ve seen a bunch of foam rollers, but they are usually smooth. The rumble roller is great, because of the ridges all over it that kind of resemble fingers when you roll them on your muscles. It really helps you get into the muscles, especially more difficult places with smaller muscle groups. And we absolutely love it for the upper and middle back. Obviously, if you have an injury in the upper or middle back, you should be careful using any kind of foam roller until you are feeling better. And remember, we don’t recommend foam rolling on your spine directly or on your lower back directly. Foam rolling directly on areas of injury can actually cause the area to get aggravated, so it is much better to foam roll areas that are causing the pain itself, instead of the actual area with pain.
The biggest question we always get with foam rolling is. “how much will it hurt?” In the beginning, it will hurt a little. Okay, it may hurt more than a little. You have knots in your muscles that have been there for years (or decades). the good news is that the discomfort is only there when you are pressing into the knots with the roller. As soon as you stop, the pain will disappear. And we have never seen any bruising with foam rolling. And, if you keep it up consistently on a daily basis, your knots will start to dissipate and that means you will be in much less pain or no pain at all when you roll.
There are so many areas in the modern human body that are too tight and that has a direct effect on your low back. Low back pain is caused my muscular imbalances that are the result of some muscles being too weak and others being too tight. So, a roller like the rumble roller is amazing for loosening up those tight muscles. It is extremely effective and most people feel a big difference after trying it just once. Instead, use it on all the tight areas that are warping your spine and giving you poor posture. If you want to learn more about your posture and which muscles you can be foam rolling, we recommend the S.M.S. Low Back Pain Rehab Program.
